Oriental and Area Rug Cleaning

At MasterCare, we can clean your area rugs or Oriental carpets “on location” in your home, or we can bring them to our shop and clean them “in-plant”. We have one of the finest “in-plant” cleaning processes available in New London County. Our preference is to clean them “in-plant”.

we clean fine hand made rugs and synthetic rugsStep 1: Pre-Inspection and Pick Up
Our company will come to your home to pick up your rug, or you may drop it by our shop. We will determine as much as we possibly can about the type of rug and inherent qualities that may affect cleaning. While we will do our very best to prevent problems, when cleaning Oriental Rugs, fading, shrinkage, dye bleed, color loss or browning are all possible. It is not a flaw in the cleaning process, but a characteristic of the fibers and dyes we are dealing with.

Step 2: Dry Soil Removal
Woven rugs, especially hand knotted rugs are designed to hide dry soil. We remove as much dry soil as possible before we actually “clean” your carpets. We place your rug “upside-down” on a grate, and use a specially designed machine with leather straps to “beat” soil out of the carpet before cleaning. This is the most important step in cleaning your carpet.

Step 3: Pre-Condition
Depending on fiber content and soiling type, we will select the proper pre-conditioner to use to emulsify the soils. This pre-conditioner will help make the cleaning more effective.

Step 4: Pre-Spot
Any potentially difficult spots will be pre-treated with special solutions to increase chances of removal.

Step 5: Wash
We use a variety of different methods to wash your rug, ranging from full immersion to low moisture methods, designed to get maximum cleaning while protecting sensitive natural fibers.

Step 6: Rinse
Depending on the type of rug,  it will be rinsed with pre-treated soft water.

Step 7: Dry
Once the soil is rinsed away, the rug is dried flat or hung to dry in a controlled environment. Proper drying is essential to avoid unnatural shrinkage.

Step 8: Finishing
When the rug is dry, it is combed and finished with soft groomers made for specialty rugs.

Step 9: Post Inspection and Delivery
Our cleaning specialist will give the rug a final inspection. Your rug will be wrapped in brown craft paper to protect it from dust and environmental soils until it is picked up or delivered.
What can you do to prolong the life of your carpet?

Rotation – To insure even wear, your rug should be rotated once a year. Depending on the traffic, the rotation may vary from six months to two years.

Vacuuming – Oriental rugs, like most carpeting, should be vacuumed on a regular basis to remove dirt and restore life to the fibers. Be sure not to vacuum the fringe with your beater bar! Use the end of a vacuum hose from a canister vacuum.
